The Apple Tree Who Wished to Be a Christmas Tree

Composer: Ayako Meida

Words from composer

Christmas Stories woven together like a relay by five composers—my heart leaped at this dream-like project. As the leadoff composer, I didn’t overthink things (?) and wrote freely and expansively.
As the opening to the entire work, it begins with an intro of bell-like sounds evoking Christmas, then unfolds into the slightly bittersweet and heartfelt story of the apple tree. The women’s voices, men’s voices, and piano each sparkle with their own charm, and there are a cappella passages that showcase the choir. While the piece seems to have a gentle mood, it takes a dramatic turn from the middle section. I hope you will enjoy it.
We approached the premiere without any consultation about the content of the five pieces, but each composer’s ideas blossomed beautifully, the performance was wonderful, and it became a surprisingly well-balanced and enjoyable work. It was a truly blessed experience.
