David Walters

David Walters is an international award-winning composer currently pursuing a DMA in choral conducting and composition at Louisiana State University. He serves as a Graduate Assistant and Instructor of Choral Conducting at LSU and as Chancel Choir Director at the University Presbyterian Church. He is a former member of the Portland State Chamber Choir and holds both an MM in Choral Conducting and a BM in Music Composition from Portland State University. Prior to his LSU graduate studies, David held the position of Assistant Conductor for ISing Choir in Beaverton, OR and served on its Board of Directors. 

In 2019, David’s A Voice is Heard in Ramah won 3rd place with the International Federation for Choral Music and recently received its world premiere by Ethan Sperry and the Portland Chamber Choir. In 2022, Choral Arts Initiative premiered Paradise as part of his selection as a composition fellow for the PREMIERE|Project and The Dreams of The Dreamer won 1st place with the 8th Japan International Choral Composition Competition. Upcoming projects include a collaboration with the LSU Space Grant program about cosmology and in Spring 2023, a concerto for clarinet and choir, written with composer Janghyun Kim, to be premiered alongside facilitated discussions about racial diversity and understanding. 

A passionate advocate for living composers, David has coordinated two successful Choral Symposia at Louisiana State University, established a Composer-in-Residence program at University Presbyterian Church, and is regularly commissioning new music.
