A Sleepless Christmas Night

Composer: Toyotaka Tsuchida

Words from composer

When I received the invitation to participate in the “Five Christmas Stories” project featuring five composers, I was told that “A Sleepless Christmas Night,” the piece I would be composing, would be placed in the middle of the suite. With this in mind, I composed this work as the suite’s only unaccompanied piece.

In composing this piece, I decided in advance only that I would not use divisi and would not employ vocalise. For the selection of notes, I simply embraced the world of the text and wove the music as if leisurely enjoying a Christmas night. While the composers did not consult with each other about the suite’s structure, since the pieces before and after mine are relatively fast-tempo works, this piece functions as the slow movement of the suite. When performing, I would be grateful if you would take time to savor the melodies of each part.
