Credo from Missa Japonica

Composer:Matteo Magistrali
Words from the Composer

About the Mass

This composition – for chorus and piano – was commissioned by dear friend and maestro Ko Matsushita in 2022; I love this piece because it’s a homage to the wonderful Japan (loved by me) and the friends who live there. Each section contains references to Japanese culture in terms of musical scales, sound clusters, rhythms, lyrics and musical quotation of melodies.

Credo

It is the longest and most articulate text of the Mass and, consequently, of the composition. It opens with a pseudo-aleatory section exclusively spoken that represents the people of the faithful who profess,in independent way, the faith in God. This flows into a solemn and declamatory section where the choir sings in unison (on three octaves, that are presenting the trinity). These singing blocks in unison are fundamental in my interpretation and repeat itself cyclically, emphasizing the power and strength of the faith professed.
