Spring(TTBB)

Composer: Kotaro Watahiki

Words from composer

I composed this piece with an emphasis on structural clarity. The key changes follow a progression from “Tonic Key → Subdominant Key → Dominant Key → Tonic Key.” The meter varies with each verse: the first verse is in 3/4 time, the second in 4/4, and the third in 6/8, creating a dynamic atmosphere. The sections featuring bird songs were so delightful that I found myself including them repeatedly. I hope listeners will feel the joy of singing the main theme, “Spring! the sweet Spring!”
Just before composing this piece, I spent a long winter in the hospital. When spring arrived, I realized that “the joy of spring and sharing that joy with others” was what mattered most. Reading Thomas Nashe’s poem “Spring,” I was deeply moved by the timeless celebration of the season. The poem’s charm lies in its imagery: daisies kissing, elderly people basking in the sun, and birds singing joyfully.
