In these days of terrible world turmoil – war, famine, floods and fire, it is hard not to compose music that is full of angst and frustrated hopelessness. In my music I take solace from the stillness and beauty of the Australian landscape and in the Henry Kendall poem, written more than 140 years ago, in which there is a calm and serenity with an underlying energy and might of a distant thunder storm. A delicate melodic flourish floats effortlessly over a simple harmonic structure giving freedom to the upper voices of the choir to create
beautiful clouds of distant calls and birdsong signalling the impending storm. Gradually growing in intensity, the harmonies become more complex and energetic, building to a thunderous climax as the heavens open and the rain fills the valleys, rejuvenating the Mountain Spring.
